Day 29 June 11th Baton Rouge, Louisiana

We have two days here to explore Baton Rouge, the French Quarters and LSU. We are staying in a campground in Baton Rouge.

We passed by the famous Caesers Superdome on the way to Baton Rouge. It is a multi sports and event dome similar to the Roger’s Centre (Skydome) in Toronto.

People tell us not to be in the French Quarters past 6pm! We had a hard time finding parking. The public parking spaces costs $48 – $65 US DOLLARS for 2 hours! Eventually, a scruffy man helped us back into a free parking on the street. Then he asked us to pay him!! We didn’t bring any cash. NOTE TO SELF – Carry cash so you can tip these people who help you out.

We ate the famous po’boys in the French Quarters. It is a sandwich just like a subway sandwich but with a variety of typical Cajun meats and fillings served with shredded lettuce, sliced tomato, sliced pickles, and mayonnaise. It often has creole mustard. The po’boy was created in 1929 during large scale strikes on the picket line by the Martin brothers to provide a hearty sandwich to the workers on the picket line. It was difficult to find a vegetarian po’boy and I had to settle for the sides!

Next we walked on the boardwalk around the Mississippi River. The giant Mississippi drains into the Atlantic Ocean here. I would recommend a Mississippi River Tour here in Louisiana rather than in Memphis. I think it is a lot of picturesque and informative.

The board walk was amazing and it was a beautiful day!

I saw a couple holding Higher Taste a vegetarian cookbook issued by the ISKCON the International Society of Krishna Consciousness. I asked them where they got it and he said there was a group of yellow robed bald monks with sikas (a small ponytail at the back) who were distributing it. I follow the Hare Krishna Movement and enjoy the Higher Taste Cookbook. ISKCON is famous for its Sunday Feasts, and I enjoy the music the dancing and the love with which they serve the Deities of Krishna and Radha His eternal consort, whom they dress so beautifully. The food served in the temple is called prasad. It literally means leftover. The simple gesture of offering food first to the creator before consuming it (or adding it back to the pot) is equivalent to a child offering the first bite of a candy to the father, who initially gave the candy to the child. Or as is a common practice in rural India the water from the mighty and healing River Ganga, a handful of water is collected and offered back to the river. I started doing this at home, and it does really feel like it has a “higher taste”!

I had been to the ISKCON temple in Atlanta and plan to go to the temples in Houston, Dallas and Salt Like City also. Stay tuned for my experiences in those sites!

Today I will highlight a few clients’ experience with Reverse Mortgage in this short video. They will tell you how a Reverse Mortgage helped them, live independent, richer lives without worrying about cash flow, choosing between healthcare and food or cutting coupons just to get by. A lot of seniors have saved up, spent on their children for tuition and down payments, paid of their mortgages and worked hard. Their homes have appreciated, and cost of living has gone up. Even their property taxes are high. Why should they compromise their lifestyle now? In Canada, seniors are protected as

  • The Bank can never own their home.
  • The Bank can never force them to leave their home.
  • If the home value drops below total mortgage owed, for any reason, the BANK HAS TO TAKE THE LOSS.
  • The Equity in the home remains with the homeowner and after the homeowners pass away it remains the property of the estate.

Retire Rich and live on your own terms.

Tomorrow, we visit Mike the Tiger: the living Mascot of the Louisiana State University (LSU)
